His handmade chairs are not only very comfortable - they are also durable works of art. His handmade tables are built with equal emphasis on beauty and function. Using time honored construction techniques, Al works with a wide variety of native Ozark hardwoods. Each piece is personally selected for quality, character, and beauty. Metal, rawhide, and leather are also incorporated into his designs. Al's goal is to build unique handmade rustic and contemporary furniture that is a good value. By working with clients in the design process, he hopes to construct personalized custom chairs and tables that will make a bold statement and be enjoyed for generations. Handmade ChairsA chair should not simply be a thing to sit in. Instead, it should be comfortable and comforting to the extreme. "A good chair is one that, after a while, you forget your setting in," says Al. A chair should quietly encourage a long conversation after a meal, reading several chapters in a good book, or relaxing away the stress of everyday life.Al's handmade custom approach provides consistent high quality while also allowing for variations to fit the individual. He always stays focused on the main characteristics of a handmade chair - total comfort, strong construction and enduring beauty. When building chairs, Al stays true to the time-proven traditional construction techniques of "post and rung" chair making. This basically involves joining very dry "rungs" (horizontal pieces) into "posts" (legs) containing a higher moisture content. Since the legs shrink slightly as they dry, this method assures that joints will actually tighten over time instead of loosen. Through a combination of steam bending and shaping pieces by hand, Al achieves a look that is unique. He says "... I try to emphasize the character of the wood, it's grain, or possibly a small 'defect' that is really a point of interest. I usually leave small hand tooling marks, showing that the chair was truly handmade." Handmade TablesA well built custom table often sets the tone for an entire room. A personalized handmade table also makes a strong statement about one's style and esthetic. Al Boswell believes that a table, big or small, should exhibit "... an equal balance of eye catching beauty and total function; tough enough to stand up to years and years of hard everyday use."With this in mind, Al searches for special pieces of hardwood, looking for the unique, beautiful and durable. In his custom handmade process, no corners are cut in construction techniques. For metal tables, Al works with a talented metal artist to fabricate the table bases. The type of finish is of critical importance for a table top. Al's finish feels and looks like hand rubbed oil, but in fact it is as tough and resistant to wear, heat, and chemicals as the most advanced industrial finish.
